A simple way of tagging files to be acted upon

Evgeni, it'd be a boon to have a simple way to tag files (other than the volatile CTRL-RMB). I was hoping that the "Tags" column might present a way to do this, but I was apparently wrong. The simplest way I can think of at the moment is to institute checkbox marking for each item .
